Industrial Flexible Duct: Heavy-Duty Applications Guide

How to select, size, and install flexible ducting for industrial ventilation -- welding fume extraction, dust collection, chemical exhaust, confined space ventilation, and high-temperature applications.

Published: August 26, 2026|By USFlexDuct Engineering

Industrial flexible duct handles the applications that standard HVAC flex duct cannot -- welding fumes at 400F+, abrasive dust particles, corrosive chemical vapors, and confined space ventilation where rigid ductwork is impossible to install. Unlike residential HVAC ducting, industrial flex duct must withstand harsh operating conditions while meeting OSHA, ACGIH, and NFPA safety requirements.

We manufacture and supply a complete range of industrial flexible hoses and ducts from our Houston warehouse, including nylon fabric, silicone, PVC, polyurethane, and canvas constructions rated from -40F to 1,200F. This guide covers how to select the right industrial duct for each application.

Application 1: Welding Fume Extraction

Welding generates toxic fumes containing manganese, chromium, nickel, and other metals that require capture at the source per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252. Industrial flex duct connects portable fume extraction arms to centralized filtration systems.

  • Material: Silicone fabric hose rated to 550F for close-source extraction, or PVC-coated nylon for ambient capture with longer duct runs.
  • Sizing: ACGIH Industrial Ventilation Manual recommends 100-150 fpm capture velocity at the fume source. For a 12-inch radius capture zone, this requires approximately 250-400 CFM through a 6-8 inch duct.
  • Velocity: Maintain 3,500-4,500 fpm transport velocity in the duct to prevent particulate settling. For a 6-inch duct, this means 690-885 CFM; for an 8-inch, 1,220-1,570 CFM.
  • Key concern: Temperature at the source can exceed 400F. Standard PVC or nylon duct melts at these temperatures. Always use silicone or stainless steel within 3 feet of the welding arc.

Application 2: Dust Collection

Wood shops, metalworking facilities, concrete plants, and grain handling operations all generate respirable dust that requires collection per OSHA PEL (Permissible Exposure Limits). Industrial flex duct provides the flexible last-mile connection between machines and the main collection trunk.

  • Material: Polyurethane (PU) hose for abrasion resistance, or PVC for light-duty dust. PU hoses last 3-5x longer than PVC in abrasive applications.
  • Sizing by machine: Table saw: 4-inch, 350 CFM. Planer: 6-inch, 785 CFM. Wide belt sander: 6-8 inch, 550-1,000 CFM. CNC router: 4-6 inch, 350-600 CFM per pickup point.
  • Transport velocity: ACGIH recommends 4,000 fpm for fine wood dust and 3,500 fpm for coarse chips. Velocities below this allow dust to settle in the duct, creating fire and explosion hazards.
  • Anti-static: For wood dust, grain, and other combustible materials, use anti-static duct with a grounding wire per NFPA 652. Static discharge can ignite suspended dust clouds. Our dust collection guide covers grounding requirements in detail.

Application 3: Chemical Fume Exhaust

Laboratories, plating shops, semiconductor fabs, and chemical processing facilities handle corrosive vapors that attack standard metal and nylon ductwork. Flex duct in these environments must resist chemical degradation while maintaining structural integrity.

  • Material: PVC spiral hose for acid and base fumes (excellent resistance to HCl, H2SO4, NaOH). Silicone for organic solvent fumes at elevated temperatures.
  • Sizing: Lab fume hoods typically require 100-150 fpm face velocity. A standard 4-foot hood at 100 fpm face velocity needs approximately 400 CFM exhaust, requiring an 8-10 inch duct.
  • Velocity: Chemical fumes (gases, not particulates) can be transported at lower velocities -- 1,000-2,000 fpm is typical. This allows smaller duct sizes than dust collection.
  • Compliance: ANSI Z9.5 (Laboratory Ventilation) and NFPA 45 govern laboratory exhaust systems. Duct materials must be compatible with the chemicals being exhausted.

Application 4: Confined Space Ventilation

Confined space entry per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 requires forced-air ventilation when atmospheric hazards are present. Portable blowers with nylon fabric duct hose are the standard solution.

  • Material: PVC-coated nylon fabric -- lightweight, compressible for transport, and available in high-visibility yellow or orange.
  • Sizing: OSHA requires a minimum of 20 air changes per hour for permit-required confined spaces. For a 500 cubic foot manhole, that is 167 CFM minimum = 8-inch duct at 475 fpm.
  • Considerations: Use positive pressure (blowing in clean air) rather than negative pressure (exhausting contaminated air) as the primary ventilation strategy. Positive pressure ensures the entire space receives fresh air, while negative pressure only evacuates air near the duct opening.
  • Length limits: Each foot of flex duct reduces delivered CFM due to friction. A typical portable blower delivering 1,500 CFM at the outlet may deliver only 800 CFM through 25 feet of 12-inch flex duct. Account for duct length in your CFM calculations.

Application 5: High-Temperature Exhaust

Engine test cells, industrial ovens, kilns, and thermal processing equipment generate exhaust gases at temperatures exceeding what standard duct materials can handle. Specialized high-temp flex duct is required.

  • 250-550F: Silicone fabric hose with fiberglass reinforcement. Used for oven exhaust, dryer vents in industrial laundry, and moderate-temperature engine exhaust.
  • 550-1,200F: Stainless steel flex duct or ceramic fiber duct. Used for kiln exhaust, foundry ventilation, and turbocharger hot-side connections.
  • Sizing: Same CFM calculations as standard ventilation, but account for air expansion at elevated temperatures. Hot air is less dense -- 400F air occupies approximately 1.65x the volume of 70F air. Size ducts for the expanded volume, not the room-temperature CFM.

Sizing Industrial Flex Duct: CFM and Velocity Table

Industrial applications typically run at higher velocities than HVAC systems to maintain transport velocity for particulates. Here are the CFM capacities at typical industrial velocities:

Compliance and Safety Standards

Industrial ventilation ductwork must comply with multiple safety standards. Key references:

  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.94 -- Ventilation requirements for abrasive blasting, grinding, spray finishing, and open surface tanks.
  • ACGIH Industrial Ventilation Manual -- The definitive reference for hood design, capture velocities, transport velocities, and system layout. The 30th edition (2024) is the current standard.
  • NFPA 91 -- Exhaust systems for air conveying of vapors, gases, mists, and particulate solids. Covers fire protection requirements for ductwork.
  • NFPA 652 -- Standard on the fundamentals of combustible dust. Requires anti-static duct and proper grounding for systems handling combustible particulates.
  • ANSI Z9.2 -- Fundamentals governing the design and operation of local exhaust ventilation systems.

OSHA Compliance Note

OSHA requires employers to provide adequate ventilation when employee exposure to airborne contaminants exceeds the PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit) or TLV (Threshold Limit Value). For welding fumes, the manganese PEL is 5 mg/m3 (ceiling). For wood dust, the PEL is 5 mg/m3 (hardwood) and 15 mg/m3 (softwood). Industrial flex duct is a component of the ventilation system that achieves these exposure limits -- it must be sized and installed correctly to deliver the required capture velocity at the source.

Industrial Flexible Duct FAQ

What type of flexible duct is best for welding fume extraction?
Silicone fabric duct hose rated to 550F or higher is the best choice for close-source welding fume extraction. The silicone withstands the heat near the welding arc while remaining flexible enough for repositioning. For longer duct runs beyond 3 feet from the source, PVC-coated nylon is acceptable as the fume temperature drops quickly with distance. Stainless steel flex duct is used for continuous high-temperature applications above 550F.
What velocity is needed for dust collection ductwork?
ACGIH Industrial Ventilation Manual recommends minimum transport velocities of 3,500 fpm for coarse wood chips, 4,000 fpm for fine wood dust, 4,000-4,500 fpm for metal grinding dust, and 3,000-3,500 fpm for paper and fabric dust. Velocities below these minimums allow particulate to settle in the duct, creating fire hazards and reducing system efficiency. Calculate the required duct diameter based on the machine CFM and target transport velocity.
Does industrial flex duct need to be grounded?
Yes, for any application involving combustible dust (wood, grain, flour, metal powder, paper). NFPA 652 requires duct systems handling combustible particulates to be grounded to prevent static discharge that could ignite a dust cloud. Use anti-static duct with an embedded grounding wire, and connect the wire to the facility ground at both ends. PVC duct without anti-static treatment generates significant static and is prohibited for combustible dust applications.
