Nylon duct hoses are the workhorse of industrial portable ventilation. Lightweight, highly flexible, and resistant to abrasion, these nylon ducts are used in applications ranging from workshop dust collection and welding fume extraction to confined space ventilation and temporary HVAC. Unlike rigid metal ductwork or even standard HVAC flex duct, nylon duct hoses are designed to be deployed, repositioned, and stored repeatedly -- making them indispensable in dynamic industrial environments.
As a manufacturer of industrial hoses and nylon ducts with over 30 years of engineering experience, we produce nylon duct hoses across multiple construction types and diameter ranges at our production facility in Brookshire, TX. This guide covers everything you need to specify the right nylon duct hose for your application.
What Is a Nylon Duct Hose?
A nylon duct hose is a flexible, collapsible ducting product constructed from woven or knitted nylon fabric, typically reinforced with a steel wire helix for shape retention and crush resistance. The nylon fabric may be used uncoated (for maximum breathability and lightweight) or coated with PVC, polyurethane, or other polymers for improved chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, and airtightness.
Key characteristics that distinguish nylon ducts from other flexible duct types:
- Lightweight. A typical 8" nylon duct hose weighs 0.3-0.8 lb per linear foot -- roughly 50-70% less than equivalent PVC or canvas duct hoses. This makes nylon ducts the preferred choice for portable and temporary installations where the hose must be carried, deployed, and stored frequently.
- Highly flexible. Nylon fabric has a natural flexibility that allows tight bend radii without kinking or collapsing. Most nylon duct hoses can bend to a radius equal to 1-1.5x the duct diameter -- tighter than PVC or rubber alternatives.
- Compressible for storage. When not in use, nylon duct hoses compress to approximately 10-15% of their deployed length, making them easy to store in tool boxes, vehicle compartments, and equipment cabinets.
- Abrasion resistant. Woven nylon is inherently resistant to abrasion, scuffing, and tearing. PVC-coated nylon adds another layer of surface protection for harsh environments.
- Temperature range. Standard PVC-coated nylon ducts operate from -4 F to +212 F (-20 C to +100 C). Specialized high-temperature nylon fabrics extend this range to +300 F (+150 C) or higher.
Types of Nylon Duct Hoses
Nylon duct hoses come in several construction variants, each optimized for specific performance requirements:
1. PVC-Coated Nylon Duct Hose
The most common type. A woven nylon fabric base is coated on one or both sides with PVC, creating a durable, airtight, and chemical-resistant duct. The PVC coating provides:
- Complete airtightness -- no air leakage through the duct wall
- Resistance to oils, grease, and most industrial chemicals
- Improved abrasion resistance over uncoated nylon
- Moisture barrier -- prevents condensation wicking through the fabric
Our PVC-coated nylon duct hose uses this construction with a steel wire helix reinforcement, available in 3" to 12" diameters. Temperature range: -4 F to +212 F. This is the go-to product for general-purpose industrial ventilation, dust collection, and fume extraction.
2. Uncoated (Breathable) Nylon Duct
For applications where air permeability through the duct wall is acceptable or desirable. Uncoated nylon ducts are lighter than coated versions and offer better airflow through the fabric itself. Common applications include:
- Grain drying and agricultural ventilation (air passes through the fabric to dry material)
- Temporary cooling where some air diffusion along the duct length is beneficial
- Lay-flat deployment in confined spaces where rigid deployment is not possible
3. High-Temperature Nylon Duct Hose
Constructed from heat-resistant nylon blends or aramid-reinforced fabric for applications exceeding the +212 F limit of standard PVC-coated nylon. These hoses handle temperatures up to +300 F (+150 C) continuously and short-term spikes to +400 F (+200 C). Used for:
- Engine exhaust extraction in automotive workshops and garages
- Hot air ducting from industrial dryers and ovens
- Welding fume extraction near heat sources
For even higher temperatures (up to +572 F / +300 C), consider our silicone fabric duct hose, which uses silicone-coated fabric instead of nylon.
4. Anti-Static Nylon Duct Hose
Static buildup in duct hoses creates ignition risk when conveying combustible dust (wood, grain, metal, plastic). Anti-static nylon ducts incorporate a grounding wire embedded in the duct wall or a conductive carbon-loaded coating. The grounding wire is connected to the facility's grounding system at each duct connection point. This is critical in industries covered by NFPA 652 (Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust) and ATEX regulations.
Nylon Duct Hose Sizes and Specifications
Nylon duct hoses are available in standard diameters from 3" to 12" for most industrial applications. Larger diameters (up to 24") are available in canvas and PVC constructions. Here are the standard specifications for our PVC-coated nylon duct hose range:

Industrial Applications for Nylon Duct Hoses
Nylon duct hoses serve a wide range of industrial ventilation needs. Here are the most common applications with sizing and specification guidance for each:
Dust Collection
Nylon duct hoses connect portable or benchtop dust collection systems to individual machines (table saws, sanders, planers, CNC routers) in woodworking shops, metalworking facilities, and manufacturing floors. Key sizing requirements:
- Woodworking: 4" for individual tools, 6" for main collection runs. Minimum transport velocity: 3,500 fpm to keep wood dust suspended.
- Metalworking: 4-6" for grinder and deburring station extraction. Minimum transport velocity: 4,000 fpm for metal particles.
- CNC machines: 4-6" per spindle/tool station. Total CFM depends on number of simultaneous operations.
For heavy dust loads and larger systems, consider our canvas fabric duct hose (up to 48" diameter) or PU flexible hose (3x more abrasion-resistant than PVC-coated nylon).
Welding Fume Extraction
Welding operations generate toxic fumes containing manganese, chromium, nickel, and zinc oxide particles. OSHA PEL (Permissible Exposure Limits) and ACGIH TLV (Threshold Limit Values) require effective local exhaust ventilation at the welding arc. Nylon duct hose specifications for welding:
- Diameter: 4-6" for single-station extraction; 8-10" for multi-station manifolds.
- Capture velocity: 100-150 fpm at the hood face (per ACGIH Industrial Ventilation manual).
- CFM per station: 150-300 CFM depending on hood size and welding process.
- Temperature consideration: Standard PVC-coated nylon is adequate for fume extraction (fumes cool quickly). For direct exhaust near the arc, use high-temperature nylon or silicone duct hose.
Confined Space Ventilation
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 requires forced-air ventilation when workers enter permit-required confined spaces (tanks, vessels, manholes, silos). Nylon duct hoses are the standard solution because they are lightweight enough to lower into a confined space and flexible enough to navigate through access openings. Typical setup:
- Diameter: 8-12" for adequate air exchange in typical confined spaces.
- Blower CFM: Calculate based on space volume x required air changes per hour (typically 20-60 ACH).
- Length: 25-50 ft typical, depending on distance from blower to space.
- Key feature: Nylon duct compresses for easy transport and deployment through manhole openings as small as 18-24".
Portable Cooling and Heating
Temporary climate control for construction sites, event tents, server rooms, and emergency shelters uses nylon duct hoses to distribute air from portable AC units or heaters. Benefits of nylon over rigid duct in these applications:
- Deploys in minutes -- no tools required beyond clamps
- Stores compactly in equipment trailers
- Routes around obstacles and through doorways
- 8-12" diameters handle 200-1,600 CFM from standard portable units
Paint Booth Exhaust
Automotive and industrial paint booths require exhaust ventilation to remove VOCs and overspray. Nylon duct hoses carry exhaust air from the booth to filtration or exterior discharge. For this application, specify PVC-coated nylon for chemical resistance (resists solvents, thinners, and paint particles) and ensure proper grounding to prevent static ignition of flammable vapors.
Nylon Duct vs Other Industrial Hose Materials
Nylon is not the only material option for industrial duct hoses. Here is how it compares to the alternatives:
| Material | Temp Range | Weight | Abrasion | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PVC-Coated Nylon | -4 F to +212 F | Lightest | Good | Portable ventilation, fume extraction |
| PVC-Coated Canvas | -22 F to +302 F | Heavy | Excellent | Heavy dust, large diameter systems |
| Silicone-Coated Fabric | -22 F to +572 F | Medium | Good | Engine exhaust, high-temp applications |
| Polyurethane (PU) | -22 F to +176 F | Medium | Superior (3x PVC) | CNC dust extraction, material conveying |
| PVC (plain) | -22 F to +176 F | Medium | Moderate | General purpose, budget option |
When to choose nylon: When portability and lightweight are the top priorities. No other duct hose material matches nylon's combination of light weight, flexibility, compact storage, and durability. If abrasion resistance is the top priority (CNC dust collection, pneumatic conveying of abrasive particles), PU hose is the better choice. If temperature is the top priority (engine exhaust, welding near the arc), silicone is the answer.
How to Size a Nylon Duct Hose
Proper sizing ensures adequate airflow without excessive velocity (which increases noise, wear, and energy consumption) or insufficient velocity (which allows particles to settle in the duct). Follow this three-step process:
Step 1: Determine Required CFM
Start with the air volume required at the point of use. Common reference values:
- Table saw dust collection: 350-400 CFM
- Sander/grinder: 200-350 CFM
- Welding fume extraction hood: 150-300 CFM per station
- Confined space ventilation: volume (cu ft) x ACH / 60
- Portable AC distribution: match the unit's output CFM
Step 2: Select Minimum Transport Velocity
For conveying applications (dust, particles), the air velocity inside the duct must exceed the minimum transport velocity to keep particles suspended:
- Fine dust (welding fumes, smoke): 2,000-2,500 fpm
- Wood dust/shavings: 3,500-4,000 fpm
- Metal chips/grindings: 4,000-4,500 fpm
- Heavy particles (sand, gravel): 4,500+ fpm
- Pure air ventilation (no particles): 1,000-2,000 fpm
Step 3: Calculate Duct Diameter
Use the formula: Area = CFM / Velocity, then convert area to diameter.
Example: A woodworking table saw needs 400 CFM with a minimum transport velocity of 3,500 fpm.
- Area = 400 / 3,500 = 0.114 sq ft = 16.5 sq inches
- Diameter = sqrt(4 x Area / pi) = sqrt(4 x 16.5 / 3.14) = 4.58"
- Round up to the next standard size: 6" nylon duct hose
Always round up to the next standard diameter. An oversized duct reduces velocity (and noise/wear) at the cost of slightly more material. An undersized duct creates excessive velocity, noise, and premature wear.

Installation and Maintenance Tips
- Clamp connections securely. Use band clamps or worm-gear clamps at every joint. Nylon duct hoses do not have the rigidity to hold a friction-fit connection -- they will pull loose under vacuum or positive pressure.
- Support long horizontal runs. For permanent or semi-permanent installations exceeding 10 feet, support the duct with straps or saddles every 6-8 feet to prevent sagging and maintain airflow.
- Ground anti-static hoses. If conveying combustible dust, verify that the grounding wire is continuous from one end to the other and connected to the facility grounding system at both the source and the collection point.
- Inspect regularly. Check for abrasion wear (especially at bends and contact points with sharp edges), PVC coating delamination, and steel wire exposure. Replace any section showing wire exposure -- the protruding wire can snag and tear rapidly.
- Store properly. Compress the hose by collapsing it along the wire helix and store flat or coiled. Avoid kinking or bending at sharp angles during storage, which can fatigue the wire helix and create permanent deformation.
- Clean with compressed air. For dust buildup inside the hose, blast compressed air through the bore. PVC-coated nylon can also be wiped clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use solvent-based cleaners on PVC coatings.
Contractor Tip
When connecting nylon duct hose to a dust collector or blower with a different diameter port, use a tapered reducer rather than forcing a mismatched connection. A smooth transition reduces turbulence and pressure loss at the connection point. Our duct connectors are available in all standard transition sizes.
