Dryer Venting (Most Common Application)

The 4-inch semi-rigid aluminum duct is the recommended dryer vent duct type by most major dryer manufacturers (Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag). It offers the flexibility to navigate the tight space behind a dryer and through wall cavities while maintaining significantly better airflow than corrugated flex duct.

For dryer vent runs through unconditioned spaces (attics, exterior walls, crawl spaces), insulated semi-rigid duct prevents condensation. Dryer exhaust air is warm and moisture-laden (120-140°F, near 100% relative humidity). When this air passes through cold duct in an attic or exterior wall, moisture condenses on the duct interior, drips back toward the dryer, and can cause water damage, mold growth, and accelerated lint buildup. Insulation (R4-R6) keeps the duct wall above the dew point, preventing condensation entirely.

Bathroom Exhaust Fans

Bathroom exhaust ducts carry warm, humid air from the bathroom to the exterior. Like dryer ducts, they are prone to condensation when passing through cold spaces. HVAC Branch Runs

In residential HVAC systems, semi-rigid duct is sometimes used for short branch runs (6-10 feet) from the main trunk to register boots where a straight rigid duct run is not possible but the full flexibility (and pressure drop penalty) of flex duct is undesirable. This application is most common in retrofit and remodel work where existing building geometry constrains duct routing.

For HVAC branches through unconditioned spaces, insulated semi-rigid duct provides thermal performance comparable to insulated flex duct with lower pressure drop. The trade-off is higher material cost and less routing flexibility for complex paths.

Insulation Options for Semi-Rigid Duct

Factory-Insulated Semi-Rigid Duct

Pre-insulated semi-rigid duct comes with fiberglass or closed-cell foam insulation factory-bonded to the aluminum tube, enclosed in a vapor barrier jacket (foil or poly). Typical R-values: R4.2 (1" fiberglass), R6 (2" fiberglass), or R4 (1/2" closed-cell foam). Factory insulation is uniform, the vapor barrier is continuous, and installation is single-step.

Availability is more limited than standard (uninsulated) semi-rigid duct — most hardware stores stock only uninsulated 4" semi-rigid. Insulated versions are typically sourced from HVAC distributors or specialty suppliers. Pre-insulated semi-rigid duct costs $3-8 per linear foot depending on diameter and R-value.

Field-Applied Insulation

Standard uninsulated semi-rigid duct can be field-insulated with fiberglass duct wrap (R4.2 to R8 available, FSK-faced for vapor barrier). Wrap the insulation around the duct with the foil facing outward, secure with tape or wire ties, and seal all seams with foil tape. This approach uses widely available materials and allows any R-value combination.

Tip: Semi-rigid duct has a slightly irregular surface profile (the helical seam ridges) that makes fiberglass wrap fit less tightly than on smooth rigid pipe. Compress the wrap firmly against the duct surface and use additional tape at the seam ridges to prevent air pockets between the duct wall and the insulation. Air pockets reduce effective R-value and can create condensation traps.

Foam Pipe Insulation

Pre-slit foam pipe insulation (polyethylene or elastomeric rubber) snaps over semi-rigid duct for quick installation. Available in R2-R4 values for 4" and 6" duct diameters. Foam insulation is easier to install than fiberglass wrap in tight spaces (behind dryers, in wall cavities) and provides a built-in moisture barrier. The trade-off is lower R-value per inch compared to fiberglass and higher cost.

Installation Best Practices

1. Extend fully before bending. Semi-rigid duct ships compressed (8 feet compresses to approximately 2 feet). Pull it to full length before making any bends — bending compressed semi-rigid duct creates sharp kinks that restrict airflow and are impossible to smooth out.

2. Make gradual bends. Bend semi-rigid duct in gentle arcs over a distance of at least 12 inches for a 90-degree turn. Sharp bends (elbow-radius turns) kink the wall, creating a pinch point that reduces the duct cross-section by 20-40%. If a tight 90-degree turn is required, use a rigid metal elbow and connect semi-rigid duct to each side.

3. Clamp all connections. Secure semi-rigid duct to fittings, boots, and equipment collars with worm-drive hose clamps. The aluminum is relatively soft and the helical seam can loosen over time from vibration (especially at dryer connections). A clamp at each end prevents the duct from pulling apart.

4. Seal with foil tape, not cloth tape. Use UL 181-rated aluminum foil tape on all joints and connections. Standard cloth-backed "duct tape" fails within 1-2 years in the temperature extremes of attics and exterior walls. Foil tape maintains its adhesive bond from -20°F to 300°F.

5. Support long horizontal runs. Semi-rigid duct is self-supporting over spans of 4-6 feet. For longer horizontal runs, add a support strap every 5 feet to prevent sagging. In attics, hang from framing with 1.5"-wide metal straps — not wire, which cuts into the aluminum.

6. Slope toward exit. For dryer and exhaust vent runs, maintain a slight downward slope (1/4" per foot minimum) toward the exterior termination. This ensures any condensation inside the duct drains out rather than pooling inside and dripping back into the building.

Building Code Compliance

Semi-rigid duct compliance varies by application:

Dryer venting: Semi-rigid aluminum duct is code-compliant for dryer exhaust per IRC M1502. Maximum duct length is specified by the dryer manufacturer (typically 25-35 feet equivalent, with each 90-degree bend adding 5 feet).
