Industrial flexible duct connects machinery, fume hoods, dust collectors, and ventilation systems where rigid ductwork cannot reach or where equipment needs to move. Unlike residential HVAC flex duct (which handles room-temperature air in low-pressure systems), industrial flex duct must withstand extreme temperatures, abrasive materials, chemical vapors, and high-velocity airflow.

Choosing the wrong material for your application can cause duct failure, fire, static discharge explosion, or chemical degradation. This guide covers every major industrial flex duct type, its properties, and the applications where it belongs.

Industrial Flex Duct Types by Material

PVC Flexible Duct

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) flex duct is the most economical industrial option. It uses a spring-steel wire helix encased in a PVC film or PVC-coated fabric. PVC duct is lightweight, flexible, and resistant to moisture and mild chemicals. Temperature range: -20°F to 180°F.

Applications: general ventilation, light dust collection (non-combustible dust), fume hood connections, portable cooling, and temporary HVAC.

Limitation: PVC generates static electricity. Do NOT use for combustible dust without an anti-static version with embedded ground wire.

Polyester/Nylon Fabric Duct

Woven polyester or nylon fabric with a wire helix provides higher temperature resistance than PVC (up to 300°F) and better abrasion resistance. These ducts are commonly used in woodworking, metalworking, and moderate-temperature exhaust applications.

Applications: woodworking dust collection, grinding dust, warm air transfer, dryer exhaust, and paint booth ventilation.

Silicone Flexible Duct

Silicone flex duct handles temperatures up to 500-600°F continuously (brief spikes to 750°F). It is the standard choice for high-temperature industrial applications where metal duct is too rigid or heavy.

Applications: engine exhaust extraction (automotive shops, test cells), hot air recirculation, furnace exhaust, and high-temperature drying systems.

Stainless Steel Flexible Duct

For the most extreme conditions — temperatures up to 1000°F, highly abrasive materials, and corrosive environments — stainless steel flex duct is the only option. Available in single-ply (fully flexible) and double-ply (insulated) configurations.

Applications: engine test cell exhaust, foundry ventilation, incinerator connections, and corrosive chemical fume extraction.

Anti-Static Flexible Duct

Anti-static flex duct incorporates a copper or carbon ground wire spiraled into the helix and uses conductive materials in the duct wall. Surface resistance below 10^9 ohms prevents static charge accumulation — critical for combustible dust environments.

Applications: woodworking dust collection, grain handling, pharmaceutical powder handling, and any process involving combustible dust (NFPA 652 / NFPA 664 compliance).
