The US flexible duct market is a $1.2 billion segment within the broader HVAC distribution industry. Hundreds of companies sell flex duct, but the number of actual flex duct manufacturers with production lines in the United States is surprisingly small -- fewer than 15 companies manufacture flex duct domestically. The rest are distributors, importers, or private-label resellers.
Understanding this distinction matters because it directly affects your pricing, lead times, quality consistency, and ability to get custom products. As a flex duct manufacturer with our own production facility in Brookshire, TX (Greater Houston), we have a unique perspective on what separates a true manufacturer from a middleman -- and why it matters for your business.
Manufacturer vs Distributor: Why It Matters
The difference between buying from a flex duct manufacturer and a distributor affects every aspect of your procurement:
| Factor | Manufacturer | Distributor |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Factory-direct, no middleman markup | 15-40% markup over factory cost |
| Lead Time | Stock ships 1-15 days, custom 2-4 weeks | Depends on manufacturer backlog |
| Quality Control | Direct oversight of production | No control over manufacturing |
| Custom Products | Custom sizes, materials, branding | Limited to manufacturer catalog |
| Technical Support | Engineering team with product knowledge | Sales-focused, limited engineering |
| Private Label | Available with custom packaging | Not available (resells others' brands) |
| Supply Chain Risk | Single point of control | Dependent on supplier availability |
For HVAC contractors buying in volume, the 15-40% pricing difference between factory-direct and distribution pricing adds up quickly. On a typical residential new construction project using 200 linear feet of insulated flex duct, factory-direct pricing saves $150-$400 per project. For contractors completing 50+ projects per year, that is $7,500-$20,000 in annual savings on duct materials alone.
Domestic vs Imported Flex Duct
Many flex duct products sold in the US are manufactured overseas (primarily China) and imported by domestic distributors. Both domestic and imported flex duct can meet UL 181 standards, but there are important differences:
- Lead time. Domestic manufacturers ship from US warehouses, typically within 1-15 business days. Imported product requires 4-8 weeks ocean freight plus customs clearance. During supply chain disruptions (as we saw in 2020-2022), import lead times can extend to 12-16 weeks.
- Minimum order quantity. Domestic manufacturers often sell by the piece (25-foot rolls) with no minimum. Importers typically require container quantities (300-500+ pieces) to justify the shipping cost.
- Quality consistency. Domestic manufacturing under direct QC oversight tends to produce more consistent quality batch-to-batch. Import quality can vary between shipments, especially if the overseas factory is juggling multiple customers and product lines.
- Tariff exposure. Imported flex duct from China is subject to Section 301 tariffs (currently 25% on most HVAC components). These tariffs are passed through to buyers, partially or fully. Domestic manufacturing avoids this cost entirely.
- Buy American compliance. Government projects, military installations, and certain infrastructure projects require domestically manufactured materials. Imported flex duct does not qualify for Buy American preferences.
What to Look for in a Flex Duct Manufacturer
Whether you are an HVAC contractor, distributor, or facility manager, evaluate flex duct manufacturers on these five criteria:
- Production capability. How many product lines does the manufacturer operate? A facility with 4-6 production lines can produce multiple duct types simultaneously, ensuring consistent availability. Ask how many linear feet of duct they produce per day. A well-equipped facility produces 50,000-100,000 linear feet daily.
- Product range. Can one manufacturer supply your entire duct needs -- non-insulated, insulated (R4.2/R6/R8), industrial, and accessories? Consolidating suppliers reduces logistics complexity and often unlocks volume pricing.
- Certifications. UL 181 Class 1 listing is non-negotiable for HVAC flex duct. RoHS compliance is required for certain projects. Ask for current certification documentation -- not just claims on the website.
- Inventory and shipping. Does the manufacturer maintain finished goods inventory, or is everything made to order? Stock availability means faster delivery. Also evaluate shipping options -- can they ship LTL, full truckload, and small parcel?
- Technical support. Can the manufacturer answer sizing questions, recommend products for specific applications, and provide engineering data (pressure drop, temperature ratings, velocity limits)? Sales reps who only know pricing are a red flag.
Essential Certifications for Flex Duct
- UL 181 Class 1. The primary safety standard for flexible air ducts in HVAC systems. UL 181 tests for flame spread, smoke development, mold growth resistance, and static pressure. All flex duct used in HVAC supply and return systems must carry this listing. This is a code requirement, not optional.
- UL 2158A. Specific to dryer exhaust connectors. Flex duct used for dryer transition connections must meet this additional standard.
- ASTM E84. Surface burning characteristics (flame spread index and smoke developed index). Required for duct used in plenums and air-handling spaces per NFPA 90A.
- RoHS. Restriction of Hazardous Substances. While not always required for HVAC duct, RoHS compliance demonstrates that the product does not contain harmful levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, or other restricted substances. Required for some government and healthcare projects.
Product Range Matters
A comprehensive flex duct manufacturer should offer these product families:
- Non-insulated flex duct. Aluminum, metalized polyester, PVC combination, and semi-rigid aluminum for HVAC, ventilation, and exhaust.
- Insulated flex duct. R4.2, R6, and R8 with fiberglass insulation and metalized polyester vapor barrier. Essential for ducts in unconditioned spaces. See our R6 vs R8 insulation comparison.
- Soundproof/acoustic duct. Acoustic insulated duct with perforated inner liner for noise reduction in noise-sensitive applications.
- Industrial hoses. Nylon, canvas, silicone, PU, and PVC for dust collection, fume extraction, and high-temperature applications.
- Duct accessories. Connectors, tape, hangers, and flexible connectors -- the fittings and fasteners needed to complete any installation.
A manufacturer that covers all five categories can be your single source, simplifying procurement and reducing shipping costs through consolidated orders.
Pricing: Factory-Direct vs Distribution
Factory-direct pricing from a manufacturer eliminates the distributor margin. Here is what that looks like in practice:
| Product | Factory-Direct Price Range | Typical Distribution Price | Your Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6" Non-insulated flex (25 ft) | $12 - $18 | $18 - $28 | 25-35% |
| 6" R8 insulated flex (25 ft) | $28 - $40 | $40 - $58 | 30-40% |
| 8" R6 insulated flex (25 ft) | $32 - $45 | $45 - $65 | 28-35% |
| UL 181 aluminum tape (roll) | $4 - $7 | $7 - $12 | 35-40% |
Volume pricing improves further. Contractors purchasing pallet quantities (100+ pieces) typically receive an additional 10-15% discount from factory-direct pricing. Ask about contractor pricing programs when you contact us.
Custom Manufacturing Capabilities
One of the biggest advantages of working directly with a manufacturer is access to custom products. Standard catalog sizes cover most residential and commercial HVAC needs, but many projects require something different:
- Custom diameters. Need a 13-inch or 22-inch duct? Non-standard diameters from 1 inch to 48 inches are available on our production lines. Custom diameters are common for industrial applications, equipment connections, and retrofit projects.
- Custom lengths. Standard flex duct comes in 25-foot rolls. We produce custom lengths from 5 feet to 100 feet per piece for projects that need longer continuous runs or shorter pre-cut sections.
- Custom insulation. Beyond standard R4.2/R6/R8, we can produce custom insulation thicknesses and densities for specialized applications (clean rooms, extreme climate, acoustic performance).
- Private label. For distributors and large contractors who want their own brand on the product. We produce private-label flex duct with custom packaging, labels, and documentation.

How to Make Your Decision
Follow this framework when selecting a flex duct manufacturer:
- List your product needs. What types, sizes, and insulation levels do you buy regularly? Can one manufacturer cover all of them?
- Request quotes from 3 manufacturers. Compare factory-direct pricing, not just sticker prices. Ask for volume pricing tiers if you buy regularly.
- Verify certifications. Request current UL 181 listing documentation. Ask for test reports, not just marketing claims.
- Evaluate responsiveness. How fast did they respond to your quote request? Do they have a technical team who can answer application questions?
- Order a sample. Before committing to a large order, buy a sample quantity and inspect the product quality, packaging, and documentation.
- Check references. Ask for references from contractors or distributors who have purchased from them for more than 12 months.
